 Class Activities at a Glance

Be sure to check out each subject's individual page by using the menu on the top left.  There you can find specific information and find acitivities to play.

Reading

Each week we have a vocabulary unit with 15 words.  The reading web site has vocabulary games and a link to listen to each word and its definition.  We also spend 1 to 3 weeks on a reading comprehension unit. We work on comprehension skills as a whole class and during small group center time.  Some of the topics we focus on in fourth grade include finding the main idea, comparing and contrasting, analyzing story elements, using context clues to define unknown words, distinguishing fact from opinion, cause and effect, figurative language, and sequencing.  Be sure to check the reading page for activities for these various skills as we discuss them in class.

 Social Studies

In fourth grade we learn about Ohio history.  We discuss geography, important people in Ohio history, and many other topics.  We spend a lot of time working in cooperative groups.  Review games for our tests can be found on the social studies page prior to tests.

Writing

Our curriculum focuses on various types of writing.  During the year we work on narrative pieces, informational pieces, and responding to literature pieces.  We also focus on other aspects of writing such as writing organized pieces with an introduction, body, and conclusion.  Writing main ideas and supporting details as well as understanding conventions of spelling and sentence structure are also stressed.  Be sure to check out the writing page for up to date information on our current project and to play review games when they are available.

Miss Woodrum

I  have been teaching at TVS since 2002.  I began teaching writing and social studies in the middle school but after three years there, I moved down to the elementary.  I have taught reading, writing, social studies, and spelling in my previous three years teaching fourth grade.  The 2008-2009 school year is my seventh year with the district.  I am originally from Indiana but currently live in Dayton.  I went to Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana for my education degree.

Class Roations

In fourth grade the students rotate between two teachers.  All students in Miss Woodrum's homeroom will go to Mrs. Wackerman's class for math and science.  All of the students in these classes will come to Miss Woodrum for reading and social studies.  Writing and spelling are instructed by the homeroom teachers.

Policies

Class Points

We have a a class system in my homeroom called Banana Points.  Students work as a team to earn points for positive behaviors.  They work together to reach a goal and earn a reward that has been voted on by the students.  Some examples of rewards include having Subway for lunch, getting extra recess time, or having a read-a-thon.

Panther Paws

While there are class rewards, the students are also accountable as individuals.  Each fourth grader has a Panther Paw.  Receiving marks on the Panther Paw leads to a set series of consequences, such as losing recess or a parent phone call.  Students who do not receive any marks on their panther paw will get to put their name in the weekly drawing for prizes from the treasure chest.

Agendas and Take Home Folders

Please check your child's agenda each night for homework or other information.   The red folder is also important.  It will have any graded work or notes home.  In order to keep communication going between home and school, I ask that you initial your child's agenda nightly.
